Teltonika Alternative: Wiman 4G Modbus Gateways

If you are evaluating Teltonika Networks RUT cellular routers or TRB gateways for a Modbus telemetry site in India, it is worth knowing what a domestic manufacturer changes about the same job. Wiman designs and builds the WT460M, WT470M, WT400M and WT410DM in Chennai — RS-485 Modbus RTU in, MQTT or HTTPS out over 4G LTE, with store & forward when the link drops.
This page compares buying models, not build quality. Teltonika Networks is a vertically integrated manufacturer with its own R&D and its own factory in Lithuania and a track record going back to 1998, their hardware is well regarded, and we set out plainly further down where they are the better pick. Everything we say about their products here is taken from their own public documentation; we have not bench-tested their hardware, so we publish no comparative performance figures and no price comparison.

When Teltonika Networks is the better choice
Teltonika Networks is the better choice in a number of real situations, and we would rather you know that up front than discover it after purchase. If you need a full-featured industrial router rather than a Modbus telemetry gateway, that is their category and not ours. Their catalogue runs from compact DIN-rail IoT gateways through to 5G routers and managed Ethernet switches, with models offering multiple LAN ports, while our range is an RS-485 Modbus gateway with a cellular, Ethernet or Wi-Fi uplink and no router-class networking stack behind it.
In the area where we actually compete, their built-in Modbus feature set is mature and broader than ours out of the box. Their documentation describes Modbus TCP master and slave, Modbus RTU, a Modbus-TCP-over-serial gateway that redirects TCP traffic to an RTU device by Server ID, an MQTT Modbus gateway with REQUEST/RESPONSE topic translation, and register-value alarms that can trigger a Modbus write or change an output state on a condition — all configurable from the web UI without writing code.
If that set already covers your application, configuring their device will very likely be faster than commissioning a custom build from us, and you should do that. They are a vertically integrated manufacturer — founded in 1998, with their own R&D in Kaunas and their own factory in Vilnius — so the supply chain and the quality control are genuinely theirs.
Their public wiki is, in our honest assessment, among the strongest documentation in this market segment: per-model configuration pages, step-by-step Modbus and MQTT guides, an open community forum and full firmware archives with separate stable and latest channels mean an integrator can de-risk an integration before spending a rupee.
RutOS being one OpenWrt-based operating system across the whole catalogue means skills and scripts transfer between models, and their published GPL source and official SDK let your own team build and install packages on the device. If you want to write your own edge logic, that openness matters, and we do not match it. Their RMS platform is a mature, purpose-built product for managing large fleets — remote access, monitoring, bulk configuration and firmware campaigns — licensed per device, with a 30-day free trial per compatible device.
Their devices are fully configurable locally through the web UI without it: RMS is an option, not a requirement. If your estate spans several countries and you want one SKU with carrier certifications and stocking distributors in each of them, their global availability — Mouser and DigiKey, plus a TD SYNNEX distribution partnership announced in 2025 — is genuinely hard to match.
Their published standard product warranty is 24 months, with a defined, documented RMA process and extended warranty available to purchase. Their published industrial specifications are serious engineering: wide operating temperature ranges, dual SIM, and reverse-polarity and surge protection on models such as the TRB245.
They have also done the Indian regulatory work. ETA-WPC approvals are published for models including the RUT240, RUT241, RUT200, RUT901, RUT951, RUTX50 and RUTXR1, and MTCTE/TEC certification pages exist for models including the RUT951, RUT956, RUT901, RUT906, RUTM50, RUTM09 and TSW114. Teltonika India Private Limited is an active company registered with ROC Bangalore since November 2023.
Choosing Teltonika in India is not a compliance risk, and anyone who suggests otherwise is simply wrong. Finally, if your site needs RS-232 or analog inputs, or you want a large mixed estate of routers, gateways and switches from a single vendor running one operating system, they are the sensible pick. Two honest caveats about this page.
We have not bench-tested their hardware against ours, so we make no claim about throughput, RF performance, thermals, power draw or reliability in either direction. And we publish no price comparison, because landed cost in India depends on the variant, the distributor, duty and the exchange rate on the day.
Questions we get asked
Is a Wiman gateway a drop-in replacement for a RUT router or TRB gateway?
For an RS-485 Modbus telemetry role, usually yes: you point it at the same slaves, define the register map and give it your server endpoint. It is not a drop-in replacement for a router role — if the existing unit is doing firewalling, VPN termination, VLAN routing or serving a LAN of clients, that is a different product category and you should keep a router there. We have not tested against every RUT or TRB variant, so send us your current register map and payload format and we will tell you plainly whether the swap is clean.
Do your gateways need a cloud subscription to work?
No. The device is configured with our own tooling and pushes to the server endpoints you nominate over MQTT or HTTPS. Our published WT470M and WT400M specifications list dual-server logging, and dual-server push is documented for the WT460M. There is no Wiman account in the data path and no per-device licence required to keep a gateway reporting.
Which certifications do your gateways carry?
Our published product data lists CE for the WT460M, WT400M and WT410DM, and FCC for the WT460M; no certification is currently listed for the WT470M. For an Indian tender or a regulated deployment — an MTCTE/TEC or ETA-WPC clause, for instance — tell us the exact clause you have to satisfy and the model you intend to use, and we will confirm in writing which current compliance documents we can produce. We would rather give you a precise answer than a general assurance.
Can you customise firmware or white-label at low volume?
Yes. Custom register maps, site-specific payload schemas, non-standard protocol variants, your branding on the enclosure and your defaults in the firmware are all work we take on at tens or a few hundred units. Tell us the quantity and the deviation from standard and we will quote the engineering separately from the hardware.
How quickly can I get units?
We build in Chennai and hold finished stock, and shipments are domestic — there is no import or customs-clearance step in the timeline. Availability depends on the model and quantity at the time you ask, so send us the model and the count and we will confirm against current stock before you commit to a commissioning date.
Do you support Modbus TCP as well as Modbus RTU?
The WT460M handles Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP; the WT470M, WT400M and WT410DM are RS-485 Modbus RTU. In the PRO series, the WT600M adds Modbus TCP master over a shared LAN — note that it is an Ethernet gateway with no cellular uplink, so it suits a wired plant rather than a 4G site. What happens to readings when the 4G link drops?
Every model listed here does store & forward: readings are buffered locally and flushed when connectivity returns, so an outage is back-filled rather than lost — up to the capacity of the on-device buffer. How do I check which LTE bands I need for my site?
Use our free cellular bands lookup — it lists the LTE and 5G NR bands each operator deploys, by country, so you can specify the right band variant before ordering. Our SIM data calculator will then size the monthly data plan, including an allowance for TCP/IP, TLS and MQTT keepalive overhead.
Is Wiman affiliated with, or endorsed by, Teltonika Networks?
No. Wiman is an independent Indian manufacturer with no partnership, reseller relationship, affiliation or endorsement from Teltonika Networks, and this page is not approved by them.
