Advantech ADAM Alternative: Wiman RS-485 I/O

If you are searching for an "ADAM-4017 alternative", the reason is usually not the module. It is that an imported part is costed against the dollar and carries duty you cannot fix at quotation time, that the delivered date is not yours to control, and that you would rather work through a register map with the engineering team in your own working hours.

Firmware behaviour tuned to your process, including the register mapOne of the more expensive parts of changing an I/O vendor is often not the hardware — it is re-tagging a SCADA database that already has thousands of points in it. We can lay our register map out to match the addressing your system already expects, and adjust behaviour such as scaling, engineering-unit conversion or the watchdog action so the module fits the plant instead of the plant fitting the module. How much of that is a configuration change and how much is a firmware build depends on the request, so let us scope it before you plan around it. As shipped, the WT32i already exposes a watchdog that is configurable over Modbus.

When Advantech is the better choice

There are jobs where the honest recommendation is to buy the ADAM module, and this is the place we would rather be useful than persuasive. Start with the direct comparison, because that is where the decision actually gets made. Within RS-485 Modbus RTU itself, Advantech's ADAM-4000/4100 line covers signal types we do not build at all: RTD, thermocouple, dedicated counter and relay modules, alongside analog and digital.

If your panel needs a PT100 or a K-type wired straight into the module, we have no equivalent and you should buy theirs. They also publish a full performance and environmental specification on the current-generation parts where we publish none — the ADAM-4117, the modern 8-channel analog input module and the correct like-for-like comparison, is rated 16-bit, 100 samples/second summed, 3,000 VDC isolation, -40 to 85 °C operating range, 10~48 VDC input, with 4kV surge, 4kV EFT and 8kV ESD protection.

We do not publish resolution, sampling rate, isolation, accuracy or temperature figures for our cards, and we are not going to imply parity we have not measured. If the site is an unconditioned outdoor cabinet or a high-noise VFD panel, or if your specification demands those numbers printed on a datasheet today, use their current-generation module.

Advantech describes the line's rugged industrial-grade cases as designed for reliable operation in harsh environments, and on that line they publish the figures to go with it. Their modules also speak an ASCII command set alongside Modbus RTU, which matters if you have existing software written against it — ours do not.

And their register maps are already supported by essentially every SCADA and HMI package, so a generation of Indian instrumentation engineers can commission one with no learning curve at all; that is worth real project time. Beyond the head-to-head, Advantech is a publicly listed manufacturer (TWSE: 2395) with roughly US$2.27 billion in 2025 revenue and around 9,000 employees, which clears a formal supplier-risk assessment in a way no small manufacturer can match.

If your primary criterion is that the vendor will still exist and still ship this part in fifteen years, they are the safer answer and we will not pretend otherwise. Their remote I/O portfolio also spans topologies we simply do not offer: Ethernet modules with a Modbus/TCP server plus MQTT, SNMP, RESTful and HTTP and a built-in web page (ADAM-6000), daisy-chainable two-port Ethernet with auto-bypass so the chain survives a module losing power (ADAM-6200), native OPC UA straight from the module to SCADA with no protocol gateway in the panel (ADAM-6300), IP67 machine-mount PROFINET on M12 (ADAM-250PN), and wireless variants over Wi-Fi, LoRaWAN and NB-IoT/Cat-M1 (WISE-4000).

The ADAM-6000 range also runs standalone peer-to-peer and graphic condition logic on the module itself, which lets a small distributed interlock work with no PLC at all — a genuinely useful capability we have no equivalent for. Our cards are RS485 Modbus RTU only. Add to that a documented warranty position — two years parts and labour from the invoice date, extendable by purchase to a maximum of five years total, available up to 90 days after order entry — a mature configuration utility and class library covering 150-plus models under one tool, a public per-model archive of firmware, drivers, FAQs and manuals going back many editions, and worldwide self-serve stock through major authorised distributors including DigiKey, Mouser, TME and RS.

That last point is decisive if you export machines and your customer must be able to order an identical spare in their own country; we cannot match it. They also have an Indian entity in Bengaluru and named channel partners, so "no local support" is not a true statement about them. Where we compete is narrower and specific: rupee pricing with no forex or duty drift, a lead time we own because we build here, engineers you can reach in your working hours and put on site, customisation at Indian OEM volumes, and local content for tenders scored on it.

Questions we get asked

Is a Wiman I/O card a drop-in replacement for an ADAM-4017 or similar module?

No, and we will not describe it as one. Our cards speak Modbus RTU only, so anything written against an ASCII command set will need changing, and the register map, terminal pinout and mounting are our own. What we will do is send you our full register map before you order, and — if you send us the exact model and configuration you are replacing — physically run the comparison on the bench and give you the written result. We only use the words "drop-in" when we can hand over that test record.

Which Wiman card should I look at if I need an 8-channel analog input module?

Start with the WT36i. Our product data lists it as 6 × 0–10 V and 6 × 0/4–20 mA, plus 2 digital inputs and one NO/COM relay output — ask us to confirm the exact terminal arrangement for the mix you need. If you need more analog channels than that, the usual answer is two cards on the same RS485 bus at different slave IDs; ask us to cost both options for your channel count. If you would rather have one card with your exact channel mix, tell us what it is — building a variant is normal work for us, not an exception.

Which card do I use for mostly digital I/O?

The WT32i. It carries 10 × 0–24 V digital inputs and 8 outputs listed as relay / transistor, and adds 2 × 0–10 V and 2 × 4–20 mA analog inputs so you do not need a second card for a couple of stray sensors. Confirm the output type you need with us at enquiry. Its watchdog is configurable over Modbus, so you decide what the outputs do if the master stops polling.

What software do I need to commission these?

None of ours specifically. They are standard Modbus RTU devices on RS485, so any Modbus master on any operating system will configure and read them — Linux edge gateway, Python script, browser tool or your existing SCADA. If you want tooling, our WIMNET Modbus Scanner does device scan, register sweep, byte-swap decode and raw RX/TX hex with timing, and there is a live demo of it on this site; ask us for the application itself. Our browser-based Modbus hex converter is free to use. There is no licence or dongle attached to the hardware.

Do these cards do Modbus TCP, MQTT or OPC UA?

Not on the card. The WT30i, WT36i and WT32i are RS485 Modbus RTU only — that is what our product data says and we will not imply otherwise. To get to Ethernet, a server or a broker, put a Wiman gateway or protocol converter on the same bus: that is the normal architecture and it also gives you logging and store-and-forward, which a plain I/O module does not have. If you specifically need Modbus/TCP or OPC UA spoken by the I/O module itself with nothing else in the panel, that is a case for an Ethernet-native module from a vendor who makes one.

What are the isolation, operating temperature, resolution and accuracy figures?

We do not publish them in our catalogue data, so we are not going to quote them on a comparison page. Ask us and we will tell you what we have actually measured, and for a specific installation we would rather discuss your cabinet temperature, your supply quality and what is switching nearby than trade datasheet numbers. If your environment genuinely needs a published wide-temperature, high-surge specification on paper today, we will tell you that too — and point you at a module that carries one.

Can you do RTD or thermocouple inputs?

Not directly. Our current range has no RTD or thermocouple variant, so a PT100 or a thermocouple needs a transmitter converting it to 4–20 mA or 0–10 V ahead of one of our analog inputs. If you want the sensor wired straight into the module, use a vendor who builds that module — Advantech's RS-485 line includes RTD and thermocouple models. If direct RTD input is something you would order in volume, tell us; it is a conversation about a new variant rather than something we can ship today.

Can you white-label the cards or change the firmware for our machine?

Yes, and at the order sizes an Indian machine builder or panel shop typically places. That covers your brand and part number on the front panel, a different channel mix, terminal arrangement changes to suit an existing loom, register addressing laid out to match a SCADA tag database you already have, and behavioural changes such as scaling, engineering-unit conversion or watchdog action. Send us the requirement through the enquiry form and an engineer will come back on whether it is a configuration change, a firmware build or a new layout.

What is the lead time and how is it quoted?

The cards are built in Chennai and quoted in INR, so there is no import clearance step, no inland freight from a port and no exchange-rate movement between the quotation and the purchase order. Ask us for the current position on your quantity and we will give you a date we are willing to be held to.
