The SIM works fine in a phone but the gateway never comes online. Here is the fix our engineers use at site, in six steps.
These are more common than the switching problem, and they look the same.
Do not skip step 5.Seeing “4G” on the phone is not enough — a page has to actually load. If it still will not connect after one clean run, try another operator’s SIM in the same gateway. If that one works, the gateway is fine and the Jio SIM is the problem.
We do not know why the phone trick works. We publish it because it works for us, not because we can explain it. We looked — operator documents, technical standards, module forums — and nobody has written down what this actually changes.
Two things you will hear that are not true. There is no such thing as a special “5G SIM” — Jio says every one of its SIMs is already 5G-ready, so a SIM cannot be too new for your gateway. And the network does not remember that the SIM was in a 5G phone and hold it against the gateway.
If you hit this, take a photo of the gateway status screen before you do the phone step and send it to us. Enough of those and we can work out the real cause — and we will publish it here either way.
No. Jio says every one of its SIMs, including eSIMs, is already 5G-ready — there is no separate 5G SIM you can buy. The card is the same; 5G is part of the plan, not the plastic. So a SIM cannot be too new for a 4G gateway.
Honestly, we do not know, and that is why this page exists. We looked through Jio's own documents, the technical standards and the module maker's support forums, and nobody has written down what the phone step actually changes. Two likely reasons: a brand-new SIM needs an activation call that only a phone can make, and a SIM can remember a network that rejected it earlier, which a successful phone registration clears.
No. Jio has never run a 2G or 3G network anywhere in India, so there is nothing to fall back to. On Jio, if 4G does not connect, the unit is offline. This is the clearest reason Jio behaves differently from every other Indian network.
That is a different problem and the phone step will not fix it. Jio uses a newer type of internet address. If the gateway is set to demand the older type, Jio refuses it. Set the APN to jionet with no username or password, and allow IPv6 or IPv4v6 instead of forcing IPv4.
Band 3 at 1800 MHz, band 5 at 850 MHz and band 40 at 2300 MHz, across the whole country. Its 5G uses n78 and n28, which a 4G-only gateway never touches. Standard modules cover all three Jio 4G bands, so bands are rarely the real problem.
We could not find any official way to do it — no setting in the MyJio app, no help page, nothing. Users who ask report being refused. Tell the customer it is not available rather than promising that a call to Jio will sort it out.
